Laura Swale

British artist Laura Swale is a painter and mixed media artist working with oils, acrylics, inks, spray-paints and a range of unconventional media, often in combination, to produce experimental and unique visual aesthetics. Artworks are often fluorescent or translucent, or incorporate internal or back-lighting.
Laura earned a BA (Hons) in illustration and graphic design at Bath Spa University and a PGCE post-graduate certificate in education from Cardiff Metropolitan University.
During her 15-year teaching career she taught art, design, textiles and photography, and in her head of department roles, oversaw visual arts, music and performing arts. She also spent two years as an artist in residence at Leighton Park in Reading, England.
In 2016, Laura relocated to Malta and founded award-winning visual arts platform Allura. Alongside its online gallery Allura Art and video series - Artist Secrets, Allura runs exhibitions and open studio events to promote the work of local artists.
As Arts and Culture Coordinator for the Times of Malta newspaper Laura covered Malta’s national arts and entertainment sector. She has also written for various publications including the Allura Art Blog.
Laura’s work has undergone a gradual shift from her early figurative painting and illustration through abstraction, an experimenting with mark-making, texture, paint-effects and printmaking, and exploring new territory with the physical and aesthetic possibilities of her materials.
Laura is working on developing a dynamic and arresting visual language to evoke sensory and emotional experiences for the viewer.
Laura’s recent work combines graphic shapes and textural effects in layers to produce a sense of depth, contrasting what is visible on the surface with what lies beneath. Her newest images explore the interface between interior and exterior worlds and what is hidden or revealed, both in our individual human experience and in our perceptions of the outer world.
Her current themes include physics, botany, sound and music.
